Jack’s Story

Jack is a thirty-nine-year old man who has been sober two years. In early sobriety, he used the Twelve Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, as well as a professional therapist, to confront a deep secret: When he was thirteen, he had multiple sexual encounters with his nineteen-year-old brother. At the time, he had great shame and guilt about the encounters. He knew the activity was wrong because it was “gay” and because it was with a sibling. Gay incest was the worst thing ever, wasn’t it? After several encounters, his brother suddenly disappeared—he up and moved halfway across the country and afterward no one in his family ever talked about why he left. In fact, they never really discussed him at all. Jack knew in his heart that something had gone horribly wrong and he privately felt responsible even though his family was acting in his best interests. Instead, Jack thought he was responsible for ruining his brother’s life.

He buried the secret of their sexual encounters for many years, never even suggesting the subject in discussions with his parents or his other three siblings. Everyone just seemed to block it and his brother’s very existence out. For many years, Jack privately questioned whether he had “caused” his brother’s banishment or if he was to blame for the great rift he felt in his family. He also felt abandoned by his brother because, after the first incident of abuse, he had actually gone back for more sex—he “liked” it. Even though he was much younger and did not know better—and his older brother should have known better—these facts did not help him during those many years of conflicted feelings. Indeed, he struggled with (1) shame for liking it; (2) abandonment that his brother had disappeared so quickly; (3) guilt for feeling partly responsible for his brother’s banishment; (4) fear and self-disgust that this sexual activity “marked” him as gay; and (5) a sense of doom that he would never be “normal” again after being involved in “gay incest.” As an adult, Jack carried on with what many call the “script” of the sexually abused. It wasn’t until he became sober and entered recovery and started therapy that he learned that having a few sexual liaisons with his brother when he was thirteen did not make him gay.
